The Harry Belafonte Memorial Scholarship 2024-25

The Harry Belafonte Memorial Scholarship is established to honor the life and legacy of the world-renowned musician, actor, and civil rights and social justice movement champion. The son of West Indian immigrants, Harry Belafonte, like so many New Yorkers, had parents who worked hard to ensure he had the opportunity to make a difference in the world. This scholarship will support incoming CUNY students who exemplify Belafonte’s commitment to Social Justice and the Performing Arts, including those who may
have formerly been incarcerated. Scholarship recipients will be those who can demonstrate their efforts to defy the odds in overcoming life’s challenges and articulate their commitment to creating a lasting legacy by making a difference in the lives of New Yorkers.
For the 2024-25 academic year, five (5) scholarships will be awarded. Applications are due NO LATER than August 9, 2024.

Eligibility Requirements
• Applicant must be an incoming First Year Undergraduate Student who will be matriculated and enrolled full-time at a CUNY College or be a first-time formerly incarcerated individual enrolling full-time for the first time in a CUNY degree program.
• Applicant must be a current New York State resident.
• Applicant must demonstrate financial need as determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
• Applicant must submit an essay regarding their commitment to social justice and the performing arts, have overcome significant challenges to pursue their dreams and embody the experiences and principles that Harry Belafonte represented.
• Applicant must submit one (1) letter of recommendation.
