American Heart Association - AHA Partners to Promote Diversity in Science

The goal of the HSI Scholars Program is to provide an academic year of scientific research experience, professional mentoring, leadership skills, workshops, and cultural competence training to promising undergraduate students at HSIs. This is our fourth Class of HSI Scholars, and we know that as they prepare to be future physicians, nurses, researchers, healthcare administrators, and public health professionals this program will help build their professional skills. The HSI Scholars Program will award a scholarship to a total of 30 students this year, representing HSI institutions in Florida, Puerto Rico, Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, New York, and California. Below is what each scholar will be awarded:
Scholar Requirements:
• A Latino/Latina student attending a Hispanic-serving institution seeking a professional degree in the biomedical and health sciences.
• Currently enrolled in a Hispanic Serving Institute as a sophomore, junior, or senior in an undergraduate program with a GPA of at least 3.2.
• Complete the application, short essay (500 word), and submit a headshot color photograph by, on our application portal: American Heart Association – Community Funding (fluxx.io)
Scholar Stipend:
• Student will receive the following when accepted as a scholar: Application cycle will open on March 18, 2024- May 10,2024. Our application is available by clicking this link: American Heart Association – Community Funding (fluxx.io) – HSI Scholar Program
• Formalized mentorship with a local Researcher
• A stipend ($7,000 per student)
• Attendance at our National AHA Scientific Sessions ( all expenses paid for in addition to the stipend)
• Experience and connection with AHA’s healthcare network that is ongoing and could lead to career opportunities.
Scholars Timeline:
• Application Open: Monday, March 18, 2024
• Application Close: Friday, May 10, 2024
• Student Interviews and Reviews: May 13 – June 21, 2024
• Scholars Selected and Informed: July 15, 2024
• Program Start/End Date: September 16, 2024-April 2025
