Escriba: A Bilingual Journal of Student Art and Writing

Student writers and student artists are recognized for their originality, clarity, skill and ability to evoke emotional responses through their contributions.

  • The criteria for “originality” is that it is clearly the student’s own writing or art and that it offers a fresh or unique perspective on the subject.
  • The criteria for “clarity” for writers is that the reader has no trouble understanding the text or confusion on what is being presented. For art works, clarity refers to the viewer being able to “read” the visual meaning of the art piece.
  • The criteria for “skill” for writers is that the writer uses correct grammar and syntax as well as good organization. This criteria applies to writing in any language, not just English. For artwork, skill applies to the visual organization of the art, being easily read and appreciated, and, if applicable, the color choices, depth, perspective, and sharpness of details.
  • The criteria for “ability to evoke emotional responses” in a text or art work is that the reader or viewer comes away with the sense of having connected emotionally to the piece.
