The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation Student Emergency Grants

The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation Student Emergency Grant is for students in good academic standing with short-term financial emergencies. The award is to enable students to make progress toward graduation. Students must be currently enrolled at Hostos Community College with a cumulative GPA of 2.01 or higher. Freshmen and transfer students will also be considered.

Examples of emergency include, but are not limited to:

  • Temporary loss of employment;
  • Displacement as a result of water damage or fire
  • Theft of property (i.e., computer, books, clothing, or other essential belongings)
  • Medical bills (i.e., transport by ambulance, surgery, appointment, etc.)
  • Eyeglasses
  • Dental work
  • Travel as a result of family emergency (i.e., death, illness)
  • Homelessness (i.e., living in shelter, storage fees, housing situation has changed)
  • Childcare (i.e., fees associated with childcare)
  • Basic-needs clothing necessary for school, internship, employment interview (i.e., coat, business attire, shoes, boots.)
  • Food card to eat in school cafeteria;
  • Travel/ Transportation card (i.e., conferences, interviews, internship, etc.)
  • Utility Bill (i.e., gas, electricity, phone)
  • Expectant Parent (i.e., basic necessities for child, such as diapers, formula, clothes)
  • Domestic Violence (i.e., assistance with relocation, clothing, emergency phone, etc.)
  • Immigration Fees (i.e., naturalization, citizenship, etc.)
  • Graduation (i.e., cap and gown)
  • Eviction Notice or Rent Arrears (i.e., past due rent stub, actual notice from court or landlord)

Award Amount
*Will range depending on documented circumstances, not to exceed $1,500 a semester and is based on availability of funds.
