Immigration Ambassador

Want to impact a young immigrant student’s life? Apply to the CUNY + NYC Department of Education’s Immigrant Ambassador Program. We have two tracks available: Student Ambassadors – you will work with high school students at an assigned school for an academic school year, keeping them engaged in their educational journey and supporting the preparation of their postsecondary goals. Community Ambassadors – you will provide in-person and virtual workshops to families, teachers, and students across New York City on
topics like College Access, Financial Aid (FAFSA & NYS Dream Act), Your Role as an Advocate, Personal Statements, Career Exploration, Know Your Rights, and more! A prorated stipend of up to $8,000 will be provided for participation from August – June 30th.

Eligibility
Must be an undergraduate CUNY student for
the full academic year 2022-2023
Must be in good academic standing
Must have Sophomore class standing, or higher
Must be a graduate of an NYC DOE high school
Lived experience as an immigrant NYC DOE
high school students strongly preferred
Insight and experience in mentoring
Experience navigating undocumented student
issues are highly valued
Fluency in another language is preferred

Qualifications

Student Ambassador
This opportunity is open to students, who are able to or feel comfortable participating in DOE Background clearance which requires a Social Security Number.

Community Ambassador
This opportunity is open to all students regardless of immigration status or work authorization.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Serve as a mentor, guide, coach, and role model to immigrant high school students; (SA)
Facilitate the care, support, and learning of high school mentees through in-person 1-on-1 and group engagement 10 hours a week; (SA) Participate in mandatory virtual, ongoing training provided by the NYC DOE and CUNY on Friday mornings; (BOTH) Check-in with an NYC DOE School Counselor or teacher to adequately plan support for your assigned mentees. (SA) Preserve strict confidentiality of student information; (BOTH) Share knowledge about CUNY-wide and college and career-specific programs, resources, policies, and culture;
Be willing to share information, experiences, challenges, and accomplishments in a developmental way;
Facilitate postsecondary planning, career exploration, and college applications;
Develop mentees in peer advocacy and community organizing;
Foster awareness of community resources that support immigrant families in general, and undocumented community members in particular;
Designation of the ambassador’s role is determined after an application and interview process.
